History

Scrabbagh NS is situated in a quiet location in the Parish of Aughrim/Kilmore. Records show that the first school was built in 1875 across the road from the present school. It consisted of two classrooms and each classroom had separate entrances. Heating was provided by open fires and fuel supplied by parents. The pupils learned English, Irish, spellings, poetry, history, geography and catechism.

In 1964, the Department of Education, in consultation with management, suggested an upgrading of the building for the benefit of the pupils. Topics discussed were lighting, heating, sanitation and furniture. The Department proposed to fund a new building with modern amenities if a site was provided adjacent to the existing school. Fundraising began under the guidance of Rev Patrick Brady. The local community made a contribution.

In 1965, a convenient site was purchased and the building began. The following year St Patrick’s NS was ready for occupation. In 2016, a School Reunion was organised for past and present pupils to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of our school. A wonderful weekend was had where past stories and laughter were shared as people remembered their schooldays in Scrabbagh NS.
